When Was Lexus Founded?

So we’ve answered the question, is Lexus owned by Toyota, but there’s much more to it than just that. While Toyota does own this brand, Lexus has its primary headquarters in the city of Nagoya, Japan where they also have their own centers for manufacturing, engineering, and of course, design. Here’s how it all began:

  • 1983: Toyota launches Project F1, standing for Flagship One, which aims to build the world’s best car. All of which came from a challenge by chairman Eiji Toyoda. This project lasted for several years and included years of research in the US to study why upper-class car buyers were looking for luxury vehicles.
  • 1989: Project F1 is completed, beginning with the launch of the Lexus, a new luxury car brand under Toyota. 81 new Lexus dealerships were set up in the continental United States.
  • January 1989: The Lexus LS 400 makes its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. Featuring a 4.0L V8 gasoline engine and rear-wheel drive, its release was a stunning shock for the luxury sedan market. It received critical acclaim and would begin gaining a substantial fanbase.
  • 2019: With the years of debuting and releasing more vehicles, surviving global economic ups and downs, not to mention the effects of the long-standing Japanese bubble economy implosion of the early 90s, the 10,000,000th Lexus is sold.
